Blue Hair Dye – How to Get the Look

Blue hair dye used to conjure up images of little old ladies at the church social. Now however, blue hair dye is a hot look. Here are some tricks to do it right.

1. The first step is to bleach your hair. Blue hair requires bleached blond hair to hold the color. Even natural blonds need to bleach first. The best bet is to go to a professional hair stylist because bleaching can burn your hair and scalp if done incorrectly. You want to be blue, not bald.

2. When you’re done bleaching your hair, look at it closely. If there are yellow tones, you may need to apply conditioner to make them white. White tones will hold the blue color better.

3. Follow the package directions when applying the blue hair dye. Do not use petroleum jelly on your scalp because it could easily get on your hair and block the blue color. Start about ½ to ¾ inches from the root and comb it evenly to the tip. Massage the hair thoroughly to assure even coverage.

4. Put on a shower cap and let the hair set as long as the package directions direct. Unusual hair color, including blue, needs longer than more “natural” colors to set. While you’re waiting, use rubbing alcohol to get out any blue stains on skin, countertops etc.

5. Apply a vinegar rinse, which will help set the color.

6. Rinse out the hair dye with cold water.

7. Dry your hair as you ordinarily would.

That’s it. Follow these directions and your hair should be as blue as you please. You may need to condition it more often because of the chemicals used. But the blues should last as long as any other hair color.
