Ten Steps to Working With Hair Dyes
Hair dyes are fun and relatively easy ways to change your appearance. Here are ten steps to using hair dyes.
1. Choose a hair color. If this is your first attempt, choose a color close to your natural hair color. Also consider using a temporary hair color. These wash out after a few shampoos so you can decide if you like using hair dyes with little risk.
When choosing your hair color, look for products by reputable companies. Read product reviews to find out if users have had any problems. Ask a professional stylist for his or her recommendation as to brand and/or color choices.
2. Read the directions. Make sure you understand all the steps to using hair dyes. If you don’t understand something, try mimicking the steps to see if it makes sense. If you still don’t understand, ask a professional stylist.
3. Do the patch test. Even if you’ve the same brand and same color for a long time, always do the patch test. Allergies to hair dyes can crop up even after years of use. It’s better to be safe.
Patch tests are particularly important if you are making a radical change in color. Hair dyes use harsh chemicals and thus you would be more likely to have an allergic reaction if you are making an extreme change.
Don’t wash your hair between the patch test until the time you color. Hair dyes adhere better to dirty hair.
4. Gather up the materials. About 24 hours after your patch test, collect all the materials you need. You will need gloves, a timer, a mirror and old towels. Your box of hair dyes may list other materials you should have on hand.
5. Put on old clothes. This is not the time to wear your brand-new outfit. Most hair dyes can stain. Wear an old towel or a work apron to protect your clothes.
6. Get a friend to help you. Hair dyes can be tricky to apply by yourself, especially the application and rinsing steps. Your friend can make sure everything is applied evenly and rinsed out thoroughly.
7. Apply the dye. Follow the hair dye’s directions carefully. Carefully apply the dye to your eyebrows. Consult a professional stylist if necessary to do this safely.
8. Set the time. Do not estimate the time. Do not leave the dye on your hair longer than necessary. Do not get involved in a complex task. Read a book or magazine or watch television.
9. Rinse out your hair thoroughly. Make sure the rinse water runs clear.
10. Condition your hair as directed by the hair dye’s instructions. Conditioning your hair will make it extremely soft and more manageable.
Enjoy your hair. Be aware that hair dyes in extreme colors may run and stain your clothing and pillow cases for some time to come. Use an old towel over your pillow cases.
Hair dyes are a really easy way to change your look. Follow the directions carefully and get ready for the compliments you will soon receive.
