Top 10 Hair Dyeing Mistakes

(Did we say ten mistakes? We lied-its eleven!)

Dyeing hair is as popular today as it ever was in the past, with an estimated 75% of women having dyed or colored hair at any one time. Whether it’s just for a new look or to cover all those gray’s, dyeing is the best way

to achieve this. But the bad news is hair dyeing may have adverse consequences on hair health by damaging and drying it out if the appropriate care is not taken, and with all the hair dyeing products on the market today, people are commonly making mistakes with the products and colors they are choosing.

Below you can find a list of common hair dyeing mistakes made by people today. The list is certainly not exhaustive and is in no particular order or sequence.

1. Probably the most common of hair dyeing mistakes is going too light! This has the effect of making the hair look washed-out.

2. At the other end of the scale, going too dark. Dark hair dye, apart from the fact that it is very difficult to remove, may give you an unnatural look if it is too dark for your skin complexion. It also makes it very, very difficult to correct the hair shade if you have made a mistake!

3. Avoid using hair conditioner for at least a few hours before applying hair dye. Shampooing is fine though as your hair needs to be as clean as possible before dye application.

4. Not carrying out a strand test before applying the hair dye. You really need to do a strand test to: (a) make sure you have chosen the right color, and (b) to make sure you or your hair have no adverse reactions to the hair dye.

5. Over dyeing your hair. For obvious reasons!

6. Incomplete hair coverage when applying the dye is another common mistake. This is not such a problem for short hair but people with longer hair should beware of this and try to make sure they cover their hair with the dye properly. Get a friend to help if you feel this may be a problem.

7. Applying dye to hair that is dirty or tangled. Make sure those split ends have been trimmed and your hair is clean. Your hair should also be damp when applying the hair dye.

8. Staining your clothes or skin while dyeing your hair is actually more common than a lot of people care to admit! Use a towel around your neck and rubber gloves over your hands. Petroleum jelly around the ears and top of the neck will keep those stains off. If your skin does happen to become stained, rubbing on alcohol should remove them for you.

9. Another less well known mistake is dyeing your hair in an area that is not well ventilated. Hair dyes contain chemicals and some of these are emitted during the application process.

10. After dyeing your hair make sure you rinse it with cold or tepid water to avoid hair loss! Not total hair loss, obviously, but some hair does get damaged and lost during the process of dyeing.

11. Never, ever dye eyebrows or eyelashes- it is very dangerous. If dye did ever get into your eyes, seek medical attention immediately!
